Dear PMs: Your Desk Is Not A Job Site

A message to the Project Managers still running their projects via email, phone calls, and Excel tabs: You are missing out.
You can't solve an on-site problem with an off-site spreadsheet. Spending time on site is not just about compliance theatre; it's the most rewarding and educational part of the job. The real learning happens in the interactions you have with the crew on the ground.
Stop seeing site visits as an obligation and start seeing them as an opportunity to connect.
Be Inquisitive: Ask why something is being done a certain way.
Be Curious: Learn the actual challenges the crew faces every day.
Be Grateful: Recognize that the crew is doing the heavy lifting that makes the project possible, work that most wouldn't dare attempt.
Tradies are the reason anything gets built. Period.
Leadership means acknowledging that you couldn't do the job without them, respecting their expertise and learning how to better support their process, not just manage their output.
